What do you wish for?
A wish is such a little thing—tiny, easily lost in the midst of a busy day. But it has such power. Such is my wish. If I’m dishonest I’ll tell you my wish is for world peace and justice. Although I’d love to see those things come to pass, they’re not my wish. So I’ll be honest with you today. My wish is a selfish thing.
Will it come true, you ask? Of course. Will it affect you? I hope so. Will the effect be large or small? (See what I did there, using affect and effect in the same paragraph. If you doubt the usage, please look it up and correct me if I’m wrong.) So back to the question of its effect on you. It will probably be small. In the way that one life touches another and another. That whole thing about no man being an island.
What is my wish? I think I’ll make you wonder what it is for a few minutes at least. See if you can catch the hint from my life so far. My husband died more than five years ago. Do I wish him alive? No nothing so banal. At the time of his death I would have wished my life ended instead of his but I’m well past that now. Of course I miss him dreadfully but I don’t wish him back alive. He was in poor health and is in Heaven now.
I have a good job, so it mustn’t be a better occupation. In fact I’m about to retire and begin to enjoy my golden years. Any small object which I desire, I can purchase for myself. I have freedom from fear and the love of caring relatives and friends, so I’m not lonely. What more is there to wish for? A yacht? A private island? I’d probably tire of both and I don’t want the headaches that seem attached to great wealth.
If a person has everything he wants, he’ll often learn to want more. But that is not my wish. Power, you wonder, maybe it’s power that I want. The man (or woman) who has everything must want power over others. Not always. I’ve spent my working years in government and I’ve seen power wielded and the harm it does to all involved. No, I don’t want power over anyone because I must give up my own power to them in exchange.
So you’ve gotten this far, and you can’t figure it out? It is so simple. Close to your fingertips as you scroll ever downward. As near as the next line.
NO!!!!! DON’T SKIP AHEAD. You must read each word to get to the end and discover my wish. After all, I wrote the words. You can at least take the time to read them. Follow them through to the end and I promise you satisfaction. If you’ve gotten this far then you are doing so well that you deserve a reward. My wish is to write a great story. There you have it. Yep, that’s it.
You can quit reading now. I only added these extra sentences for those readers (I’m sure you’re not one of them) who skipped to the end to find the answer without reading each line. Are you confused? I hope not. But it is possible. If you didn’t get it, return to the sentences in ALL CAPS and read that paragraph again.
Until next time remember…You are Born 2Be More.
